NORTH SUMATRA, INDONESIA — The Bamboo Unboxed Workshop, a six-day intensive hands-on program, will take place from 6–11 April 2026 at Orangutan Haven (OUH) in North Sumatra. The program has been officially recognized as a World Bamboo Certified Training by the World Bamboo Organization (WBO).

The workshop focuses on bamboo as a primary construction material and structural system, combining geometric principles with practical building exercises. Participants will engage in the full lifecycle of bamboo construction, from material selection and treatment to joinery and collaborative assembly. As the global design community shifts toward regenerative, low-impact materials, this hands-on education equips architects, designers, and builders with essential skills.

Organized by Giant Grass and Orangutan Haven with support from Ecolodge Bukit Lawang, the program is facilitated by a diverse team of experts. Leading the sessions are bamboo master builders, architects, and conservationists, including Munir Vahanvati and Gilbert Anton Murrer, with keynote insights from guest speakers Jörg Stamm and Dr. Ian Singleton, OBE.

The choice of venue is significant. Orangutan Haven is a sanctuary for rescued orangutans and a hub for ecological education. The setting offers a unique learning context where bamboo construction is explored in direct relationship with landscape, ecology, and community.

The Bamboo Unboxed Workshop is designed for professionals and students interested in material intelligence and sustainable practice. By aligning with the educational standards of the World Bamboo Organization, the program ensures that participants leave with globally recognized insights that can inform future regenerative projects.
