International conference highlights bamboo's role in biodiversity conservation, nutritional security, and sustainable development in the Himalayan region

DIKTEL, NEPAL — Representatives of the World Bamboo Organization (WBO) participated in the BIO-RETHA International Conference 2026, held from April 17–19 in Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality, Nepal. The conference brought together researchers, educators, policymakers, development practitioners, and community leaders to explore the theme "Regenerating Life Systems", with a focus on biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and ecological resilience in the Himalayan region.

Bamboo was highlighted throughout the event as an important component of Himalayan ecosystems, providing habitat and food resources for wildlife while also supporting local economies and traditional knowledge systems.

WBO Contributions: Science, Sustainability, and Knowledge Exchange

Although WBO Executive Director Susanne Lucas was unable to attend in person, she shared a video message recognizing the significance of bamboo within Nepal's landscapes and communities. Her remarks highlighted bamboo's environmental and socio-economic contributions, including its potential role in land restoration, soil stabilization, and sustainable development initiatives.

The World Bamboo Organization was represented by two of its ambassadors:

Dr. Santosh Oinam

Dr. Santosh Oinam, Deputy Director of Research and Development for the WBO, presented a lecture titled "Bamboo: A Catalyst for Himalayan Biodiversity, Wildlife Conservation and Nutritional Security in Nepal."

His presentation examined the ecological relationship between bamboo and wildlife species, including the Red Panda, while also exploring the nutritional value of bamboo shoots and the role bamboo can play in supporting food systems and sustainable land management.

Prof. Dr. Nirmala Chongtham

Prof. Dr. Nirmala Chongtham delivered a presentation entitled "Bamboo's Multi-Utility Role in Driving Sustainability and Economic Resilience."

Her lecture highlighted research on bamboo shoots as a nutritious food source and discussed their applications in food science, health research, and value-added product development. She also reviewed emerging opportunities related to bamboo-based food innovation and processing.

BIO-RETHA 2026: Science, Culture, and Community Engagement

The conference combined scientific dialogue with cultural and educational activities. Participants included experts and speakers from several countries, fostering international exchange on biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, and sustainable development.

Among the event's highlights were:

  • Scientific presentations and panel discussions addressing biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management.

  • A three-day science exhibition that engaged students and local communities in innovation, research, and indigenous knowledge.

  • Cultural programs that celebrated local heritage and promoted environmental awareness.

  • International perspectives on sustainability, community development, and environmental stewardship.

The conference provided a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge sharing among researchers, practitioners, institutions, and community stakeholders.
