A Tribute
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our friend, colleague sponsor, CEO and Co-founder of EcoPlanet Bamboo, Troy Wiseman.
The official statement from EPB reads:
"As co-creator of EcoPlanet Bamboo, Troy was driven by a desire to leave a lasting impact on both the environment and the communities that were part of the project landscape. He saw the immense potential of bamboo as a sustainable resource and worked tirelessly to drive market change while uplifting his workers and their communities. This same sense of citizenry and compassion was apparent in Troy's earlier days as he founded and supported a global chain of orphanages for children in need.
Just before his sudden illness, Troy spent a week in the Philippines with his EPB team, doing what he loved most - engaging with staff, building relationships and experiencing first hand the difference they are making. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy of compassion, innovation and never faltering purpose will continue to guide the company forward.
EcoPlanet Bamboo will continue to thrive, carrying forward Troy's life's work, passion and dream for positive change."
For the World Bamboo Organization, Troy consistently supported our efforts, beginning over 12 years ago. He would call just to ask how everything was going. He felt strongly that industry and community needed a strong non-government advocate for bamboo development. He cared deeply about how bamboo could make a difference to the people on the ground, as well as be a paradigm shift in sustainable timber and sustainable fiber. He knew that this shift would take time and thoughtful consideration; bamboo is not a get-rich-quick scheme. He knew that science matters, and with a strong core of science and determination, Troy and his partner Camille Rebelo set out to do what no one has ever done before.
Landscape restoration is a nature-based solution to the climate crisis that aims to improve the well-being of communities, the environment and the planet. It involves "rewilding" and natural regeneration with native plants, with focus on restoring the landscape's hydrological and nutrient cycles, soil development, wildlife populations. Troy knew that engaging and employing human communities in need plays a vital role to the success of this long-term commitment. Troy trusted in his teams and enabled people to come together for a common purpose.
Troy had a deep appreciation for underdog narratives, finding inspiration in the dedication and achievements of others. When approached about the possibility of EcoPlanet Bamboo contributing to the WBO's Bamboo Pioneer Award, he readily embraced the opportunity. Troy's innovative vision for EcoPlanet Bamboo was both groundbreaking and pioneering. We commend his endeavors and eagerly anticipate the impactful restoration of degraded lands worldwide through bamboo cultivation and community engagement. We extend our gratitude to Troy for his commitment.
